The motel room has been searched top to bottom, every drawer unturned, every pillow tossed aside. It’s a complete mess, and Cas steps carefully around the clothes strewn across the floor to join Dean on the bed, where he’s holding his head in his hands and occasionally swearing under his breath.
“Was it your father’s ring?” he asks, and Dean looks up at him, frowning. “The ring you lost,” Cas continues, reaching over and curling his fingers around Dean’s knee, trying to comfort. “It was important. Was it your father’s?”
Dean shakes his head, and reaches over to lift one corner of the blanket in a half-hopeful gesture that the ring he’s searching for will be waiting for him there. It isn’t. “No. I won it off a guy playing pool when I was sixteen. In Kentucky.”
“Oh.” Cas glances around the room, and worries his lip between his teeth. “Then…why are you so upset about losing it?”
Dean sighs, and rubs his hand over the back of his head. “It’s not a big deal, Cas.”
“No, it must be, if you spent all day looking for it,” Castiel tells him, twisting on the bed and taking Dean by the shoulders, forcing him to look up. “Tell me.”
“No, Cas…”
“Tell me!”
“Because that was the ring I was going to give you, alright?” Dean pushes his hands away and stands up, pacing away from the bed and waving his arms in frustration. “I wanted to give that one to you, and now I lost it, and it was so stupid of me and I…”
Cas can’t stop the smile from spreading across his face, even as Dean rants. “You wanted to give me your ring?”
Dean stops, mouth dropped open and a faint flush spreading across his face. “Well I…uh…”
Cas pushes himself off the bed, and walks until he’s standing right in front of Dean. He reaches up, and, with gentle hands, pulls Dean’s head down until he can rest their foreheads together, eyes locked. “I don’t need your ring to know where I belong,” he whispers, and Dean shakes his head a little, grinning ever so slightly.
“Well, I still wanted you to have it.”
“I have you,” Cas tells him firmly. “That’s all I will ever need from you. Nothing more.”
Nevertheless, when the ring is found on the floor of the Impala two days later, Cas can’t stop smiling as Dean slips it onto his finger, even if Sam won’t stop teasing them about it for the next week.
